Romeo & Juliet
The performance Mo and Jamilia is an ode to love. Aziz Bekkaoui addresses the prevailing stereotypes that Muslim women and men do not love each other and that they are forced into marriage.
In the Arab culture there is a centuries-long tradition of beautiful poetry and literature of love and affection. The fact that intimacy is shown indoors and is not openly shared with others, does not mean that the Muslim culture does not know love. With Mo and Jamilia Aziz Bekkaoui refers to the most famous metaphor of love: Romeo and Juliet.
